The Apothecary Diaries, also known as Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, is a highly-anticipated upcoming anime based on the light novel by Natsu Hyuuga. The light novel has been adapted into two manga series, one illustrated by Minoji Kurata and the other by Nekokurage. The one illustrated by Nekokurage has been licensed by Square Enix and has a dedicated fanbase.
The story is set in a fictional country closely modeled after ancient China. Maomao, an unassuming young girl with a special talent in the art of herbal medicine, is kidnapped to work in the inner palace. To gain her freedom back, she decides to live a quiet life.
Alas, the young 17-year-old possesses farsightedness far beyond her years. Her extreme curiosity and sense of justice lead her right in the middle of the “curse” afflicting the imperial heirs. Maomao tries to resolve the matter secretly, but sadly for her, she attracts the attention of a handsome Eunuch, Jinshi, and is promoted to be the emperor’s favorite concubine, Lady Gyokuyoku’s food tester.
Contrary to his innocent and charming appearance, the eunuch turns out to be rather conniving. Maomao is soon back to brewing potions and…solving the palace mysteries. What kind of past does Maomao have? Is there something bigger at play in the palace? And is Maomao actually connected to the tragedies?
Apothecary Diaries Anime: Official Release Date
The anime adaptation is being produced by TOHO Animation STUDIO and OLM. With Norihiro Naganuma at the helm as the director, it is set for Fall 2023, and the first three episodes will be released on Saturday, October 21, 2023. The official Twitter account has announced that the first season will run for two-cours.
