Bad Boys Movies in Order: Complete Chronological & Release Date Guide

If you’ve spent the last few years trying to untangle the timelines of Marvel, Fast & Furious, or whatever franchise Hollywood has decided to reboot this month, I have good news.

The Bad Boys movies have the organizational complexity of a ham sandwich. You start at the first one and keep going until you run out of Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and exploding vehicles.

There are no prequels, alternate timelines, multiverse variants, or even a movie that secretly takes place before the movie that came out three films later. All you get are four increasingly chaotic action-comedies following two Miami detectives who should have lost their badges sometime during the Clinton administration.

Bad Boys Movies in Release Order Masterlist

Unlike certain franchises that require color-coded flowcharts and emotional support, the Bad Boys timeline is refreshingly straightforward. The release order and chronological order are exactly the same. Thankfully, for once, Hollywood made your life easier instead of turning movie night into a research project.

Dive into Each of the Bad Boys Movies in Order

1. Bad Boys (1995)

Before Michael Bay became obsessed with filming every scene like the fate of humanity depended on dramatic camera angles, he made Bad Boys. If we’re looking for honest opinions, then there is no doubt that it’s still one of his most enjoyable movies.

The setup is simple: Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are trying to recover stolen drugs while protecting a witness who suddenly becomes everyone’s favorite target.

But nobody remembers Bad Boys because of its investigation.

People remember it because Will Smith and Martin Lawrence immediately click. Their chemistry is ridiculous. Half the movie feels like two friends arguing during the world’s most expensive road trip, and that’s exactly why it works.

2. Bad Boys II (2003)

Every franchise reaches a point where someone should probably say, “Let’s dial it back a little.” Bad Boys II is what happens when nobody says that. Michael Bay directed this movie the way a five-year-old builds a Lego city, that is, with complete confidence and zero concern for consequences.

The story follows Mike and Marcus as they investigate a major drug operation while navigating Mike’s secret relationship with Marcus’s sister Syd. That sentence makes the movie sound far more reasonable than it actually is.

Is Bad Boys II too long? Absolutely. At 147 minutes, this movie has the runtime of a historical epic and the emotional maturity of a teenager who just discovered fireworks.

But no one cares about the runtime because this is peak excess-era Michael Bay. Every action sequence somehow tries to outdo the one before it. It’s ridiculous, exhausting, and probably the most Bad Boys movie ever made.

3. Bad Boys for Life (2020)

This is the official theatrical poster for the 2020 action-comedy film Bad Boys for Life, featuring stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

When Bad Boys for Life was announced, people either wrote it off as a cash grab or were genuinely praying for it not to fall flat on its face. Then the movie had the audacity to be genuinely good.

After a seventeen-year gap, Mike and Marcus return to face a dangerous enemy connected to Mike’s past, while also confronting a terrifying reality that they’re not twenty-five anymore. The smartest thing this movie does is acknowledge the passage of time instead of pretending it never happened.

While Mike still wants to live like an action hero, Marcus would very much like everyone to stop shooting at him. It’s a surprisingly effective dynamic. More importantly, the movie proves that the franchise still has life left in it, which, considering the previous installment came out when Finding Nemo was in theaters, is honestly impressive.

4. Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)

This poster is for the 2024 action-comedy film Bad Boys: Ride or Die, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

By movie number four, most franchises are desperately trying to convince audiences they still matter. Ride or Die skips the existential crisis and gets straight to making Mike and Marcus fugitives while giving them access to firearms. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

The plot revolves around clearing the name of Captain Howard after corruption allegations surface. Naturally, this investigation leads to conspiracies, shootouts, car chases, and approximately zero sensible decisions.

What is most surprising about Ride or Die is how confident it feels. The franchise knows exactly what it is by this point. Nobody wants or even expects prestige cinema or subtle realism.

They want banter, chaos, and two detectives who continue to treat public property like a personal suggestion. The movie delivers all three in generous quantities.

What’s the Best Way to Watch Bad Boys Movies in Order?

For once, I get to write a movie-order article without opening seventeen tabs and drawing arrows on a timeline. You’re supposed to watch them exactly as they were released, which is:

  • Bad Boys (1995)
  • Bad Boys II (2003)
  • Bad Boys for Life (2020)
  • Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)

Congrats! You’ve mastered the Bad Boys timeline. Somewhere, a Marvel fan is furious that it was this easy.

In Conclusion

The Bad Boys franchise is proof that sometimes chemistry beats everything else. The plots are occasionally ridiculous, and the action frequently ignores basic laws of physics.

But none of that matters. You watch these movies because Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are absurdly entertaining together, and nearly thirty years later, that’s still enough.

Not every franchise needs a sprawling mythology or a complicated timeline. Sometimes, two detectives yelling at each other while things explode is perfectly sufficient.
