The anime adaptation of Monsters, the one-shot by Eiichiro Oda, was announced back in 2023 by studio E&H. The anime is titled “Monsters: 103 Mercies Damnation” and is scheduled to be released in January 2024. However, the official date of release of the anime is still not revealed.

E&H has already released the official poster and character designs for its three main characters: Ryuma, Flare, and Cyrano. The studio has also revealed the crew of the project but there is still no information about the cast of voice actors.

Upon release, Monsters will be available for fans on two major streaming platforms: Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It’s unknown which particular regions will have access to the anime, but there are always VPNs to help fans on that matter.

Monsters: Plot

Monsters: Plot

The plot of Monsters by Eiichiro Oda follows Shimotsuki Ryuma, the legendary samurai from Wano. The one-shot features the story of Ryuma’s most famed feat: slaying of a dragon. Set centuries ago from the current timeline of One Piece, Monsters has Ryuma in an unknown town as a young and penniless man.

After being given food by a young waitress, Flare, Ryuma meets Cyrano, a famous swordsman. He also learns that Flare is the only survivor of a dragon attack on a village seven years ago and it was Cyrano who saved the girl. Later, Ryuma comes across a shady swordsman named D.R. who falsely accuses him and claims to have summoned a dragon to the town.

Cyrano promises to fight the dragon alone as he implores the townspeople to leave. However, Ryuma and Flare eventually find out that Cyrano and D.R. are working together and looting the town. Ryuma slays both Cyrano and the dragon, saving the village.

Connection to One Piece

Connection to One Piece

Unlike the other one-shots of Eiichiro Oda, the story of Monsters is actually a part of the canon of One Piece. Fans may remember that Shimotsuki Ryuma made his debut in One Piece in the Thriller Bark Arc where he fought Roronoa Zoro and after being defeated, gave him Shusui

Ryuma came up once again later in the Wano Country Arc where he is a legendary hero and his sword Shusui is considered to be a national treasure. In both times, it’s mentioned that Ryuma was known as the samurai who killed a dragon, and Monsters shows his backstory.

Another important information about Ryuma is that he’s a direct descendant of Zoro whose grandmother also belonged to the Shimotsuki family.
