Remember when a movie night meant picking a VHS, arguing over what to watch, and settling in for a movie you’d probably seen ten times already? The ’90s gave us some seriously memorable kids’ movies, and now it’s time to see if they can win over a generation that has grown up with very different screens.
From chaotic adventures to unforgettable childhood classics, these 16 ’90s movies to watch with your kids are worth putting back on the big screen.
A Trip Back to the ’90s: Movies to Watch with Your Kids
1. Home Alone (1990)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Chris Columbus |
| Genre | Comedy, Family, Holiday |
| Runtime | 1h 43m |
| IMDb score | 7.8/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 8+ |
| Parents should know | Slapstick violence, peril, and scenes involving burglars |
Few childhood fantasies have aged as well as getting the house to yourself. Home Alone takes that fantasy and adds junk food, Christmas decorations, and two burglars who are spectacularly bad at their jobs.
The traps are still absurdly satisfying, but Kevin’s confidence is the real joy. It’s the sort of harmless chaos that can have kids inventing their own imaginary traps long after the credits roll.
2. The Lion King (1994)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Roger Allers, Rob Minkoff |
| Genre | Animation, Adventure, Family, Musical |
| Runtime | 1h 28m |
| IMDb score | 8.5/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 6+ |
| Parents should know | Intense, emotional, and frightening scenes |
The songs are only part of the reason The Lion King has stuck around. It’s funny without constantly trying to be funny; Scar is still gloriously unpleasant, and Timon and Pumbaa somehow became two of the most memorable characters in the whole thing.
Then there’s that opening sequence. With animals, adventure, and songs kids can actually sing along to, it has plenty to keep a younger audience invested.
3. Toy Story (1995)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | John Lasseter |
| Genre | Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 21m |
| IMDb score | 8.3/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 5+ |
| Parents should know | Mild peril, scary moments, and some tense scenes |
There’s a reason Toy Story still feels surprisingly fresh. The toys have memorable personalities of their own.
Woody is jealous, Buzz is hilariously delusional, and the rest of the gang have enough charm to make Andy’s bedroom feel like its own little world. It also has that particular Pixar magic of being funny enough for children while quietly landing a few emotional punches along the way.
4. Matilda (1996)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Danny DeVito |
| Genre | Comedy, Family, Fantasy |
| Runtime | 1h 38m |
| IMDb score | 7.0/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 7+ |
| Parents should know | Bullying, harsh adults, and frightening moments |
Matilda understands the enormous appeal of seeing an awful adult finally get outsmarted. Miss Trunchbull is terrifying in exactly the right over-the-top way, Matilda is wonderfully unfazed by most of the nonsense around her, and the chocolate-cake scene remains one of the great pieces of childhood movie justice.
5. The Sandlot (1993)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | David Mickey Evans |
| Genre | Comedy, Coming-of-Age, Family, Sport |
| Runtime | 1h 42m |
| IMDb score | 7.8/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 8+ |
| Parents should know | Mild language, crude humor, and some mischief |
Nobody is rushing to grow up in The Sandlot. The kids play, argue, show off, fall for ridiculous stories, and treat a baseball stuck behind a fence like a national emergency.
The Beast is obviously unforgettable, but the real charm is the friendship. Even kids who aren’t interested in baseball can get swept up in the summer adventure.
6. Jumanji (1995)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Joe Johnston |
| Genre | Adventure, Fantasy, Comedy |
| Runtime | 1h 44m |
| IMDb score | 7.1/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 10+ |
| Parents should know | Scary creatures, peril, violence, and intense scenes |
Jumanji has absolutely no interest in keeping things sensible. One minute you’re playing a board game and the next your house is full of monkeys.
Then come the spiders, the stampede, and whatever else the game has decided to throw at you. It’s fast, weird, and occasionally creepy, making it a particularly fun pick for kids who like their adventures with a little danger.
7. The Parent Trap (1998)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Nancy Meyers |
| Genre | Comedy, Family, Romance |
| Runtime | 2h 8m |
| IMDb score | 6.7/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 7+ |
| Parents should know | Family conflict, divorce themes, and mild romantic content |
The great pleasure of The Parent Trap is watching two very different girls realise they have exactly the same problem and immediately start plotting. Lindsay Lohan is genuinely charming in both roles, while the camp sequences are full of the sort of elaborate mischief that feels much more exciting when you’re twelve.
The twin antics, secrets, and schemes give kids plenty to get invested in.
8. Hook (1991)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Steven Spielberg |
| Genre | Adventure, Fantasy, Family |
| Runtime | 2h 22m |
| IMDb score | 6.8/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 8+ |
| Parents should know | Peril, pirates, sword fights, and frightening scenes |
Hook is gloriously overstuffed in that very ’90s way. There’s Robin Williams, pirates, the Lost Boys, elaborate sets, sword fights, and a Neverland that looks like someone’s imagination got a very large budget.
It isn’t the neatest version of the Peter Pan story, but that’s part of its charm. Kids who love fantasy can really disappear into its strange, colourful version of Neverland.
9. The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Stephen Herek |
| Genre | Comedy, Family, Sport |
| Runtime | 1h 40m |
| IMDb score | 6.6/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 8+ |
| Parents should know | Sports conflict, bullying, and mild language |
There’s something comforting about a sports movie where the team starts off as a complete mess. The Ducks have plenty of attitude, questionable skills, and some wonderfully ridiculous personalities.
The actual hockey almost becomes secondary once the kids start finding their rhythm. It’s a fun introduction to the classic underdog story without taking itself too seriously.
10. Cool Runnings (1993)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Jon Turteltaub |
| Genre | Comedy, Family, Sport |
| Runtime | 1h 38m |
| IMDb score | 7.0/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 7+ |
| Parents should know | Mild language, sporting accidents, and peril |
Cool Runnings could have treated its characters as a novelty, but instead gives them genuine personality and lets the humour come naturally from the situation. Add the training disasters, the team’s chemistry, and one extremely catchy soundtrack, and you’ve got another underdog story that’s both funny and surprisingly warm.
11. Space Jam (1996)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Joe Pytka |
| Genre | Animation, Comedy, Family, Sport |
| Runtime | 1h 28m |
| IMDb score | 6.5/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 6+ |
| Parents should know | Cartoon violence, mild peril, and sports action |
Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, aliens, basketball and a soundtrack packed with ’90s hits somehow became a completely normal movie to an entire generation. Space Jam is loud, colourful and gloriously unsubtle.
Kids can enjoy the cartoon chaos without knowing any of the basketball history behind it (which is probably for the best).
12. Casper (1995)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Brad Silberling |
| Genre | Fantasy, Comedy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 40m |
| IMDb score | 6.2/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 7+ |
| Parents should know | Ghosts, spooky imagery, peril, and mild scares |
With Casper, you’ve got a gloomy mansion, mischievous ghosts, and that slightly eerie ’90s family-movie look. Christina Ricci gives it some attitude, while Casper himself keeps the whole thing from getting too spooky.
It’s a nice middle ground for kids who want a ghost story but aren’t quite ready for horror.
13. The Little Rascals (1994)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Penelope Spheeris |
| Genre | Comedy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 22m |
| IMDb score | 6.4/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 6+ |
| Parents should know | Slapstick humor, childish mischief, and mild crude humor |
The Little Rascals is basically childhood with absolutely no adult supervision. The kids have their clubs, rivalries, crushes, and elaborate schemes, and they take all of it incredibly seriously.
That earnestness is what makes the movie funny. Younger kids, especially, can simply enjoy the slapstick and the wonderfully silly situations without needing to follow a complicated story.
14. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Duwayne Dunham |
| Genre | Adventure, Comedy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 24m |
| IMDb score | 7.0/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 6+ |
| Parents should know | Animals in danger, separation, and emotional scenes |
The three animals in Homeward Bound have more personality than plenty of human movie characters. Chance is chaos, Sassy knows she’s clever, and Shadow has the patient old-soul routine down perfectly.
Their journey is adventurous, but it’s the friendship between the three that makes the movie memorable. Animal lovers will have a wonderful time with this.
15. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Kenny Ortega |
| Genre | Comedy, Fantasy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 36m |
| IMDb score | 6.9/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 10+ |
| Parents should know | Witches, supernatural themes, spooky imagery, and mild peril |
The Sanderson sisters are the reason Hocus Pocus became a tradition rather than just another Halloween movie. They’re theatrical, ridiculous, and clearly having the time of their lives.
Bette Midler practically eats the movie alive, while Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy happily join in. Kids who enjoy witches, costumes, and a little spooky chaos will find plenty to latch onto.
16. James and the Giant Peach (1996)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Details | Information |
| Director | Henry Selick |
| Genre | Animation, Adventure, Family, Fantasy |
| Runtime | 1h 19m |
| IMDb score | 6.7/10 |
| Appropriate for | Ages 7+ |
| Parents should know | Mild peril, darker fantasy imagery, and frightening moments |
While some ’90s kids’ movies were polished, James and the Giant Peach was wonderfully weird. The stop-motion animation gives it a handmade quality, while the giant peach is exactly as strange as it sounds, and the talking insects make the whole adventure feel like a fever dream in the best possible way.
It’s a good pick for kids who like their fantasy a little unusual.
The funny thing about revisiting ’90s movies is that not all of them need to feel timeless to be worth watching again. Some are wonderfully silly, some are a little dated, and a few are probably going to make you wonder how they ever got made. That’s part of the fun.
These movies come from a time when kids’ entertainment could be messy, strange, and completely unapologetic about having fun. That’s exactly why they still have a place in a family movie night.
You get to revisit something that shaped your own childhood while your kids decide which characters, jokes, and ridiculous moments become their favourites.
Writer. Dreamer. Journalist (maybe?). Anime lover (definitely). I turn curiosity into stories and everyday life into a narrative worth reading.
