Eyes are an important feature for any character in fiction and even more so in anime, where eyes are often meant to convey the character’s emotions as well as their powers and personalities. But there are plenty of anime characters who don’t need to keep their eyes open to be amazing. This is a list of 15 such characters who always keep their eyes shut.

1) N’Doul
Anime: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders
N’Doul is an assassin working for DIO and one of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods. He’s the first one of the group who attacks Jotaro Kujo’s group when they first come to Egypt.
N’Doul is very loyal to his employer, DIO, who charmed him with his words and charisma, making N’Doul believe that DIO is the only person to truly see his value.
N’Doul is a proud Stand user. His Stand, Geb, is a long-ranged Stand made of water, but it can transform into claws able to wound its target lethally.
While a powerful Stand, it has a very exploitable weakness. As it is made of water, it can be evaporated easily with heat. N’Doul is a blind man and prefers to keep his eyes closed because of this.
2) Clavis
Anime: Death Parade
Clavis is an elevator operator in the Arbiter System whose job is the transport arbiters and guests between the floors of the system.
He also acts as a personal valet of Nona, the manager of the Arbiter System. He is seen interacting with both Decim and Ginti, though with different manners.
While he is friendly and polite towards Decim, Clavis has a habit of teasing the Viginti bartender.
Clavis has a funky look with green hair with a streak of blonde on the left, red side cuts, and several piercings on his ears and nose. Another noticeable point of his appearance is his perpetually closed eyes.
It is unknown why he keeps his eyes shut, but there might be a story present there, as none of the other characters in Death Parade keeps their eyes closed in such a way.
3) Brock
Anime: Pokémon
There’s no need for an introduction for a character as popular as Brock from Pokémon. Being the Gym Leader of Pewter City’s Gym, Brock used to give the Boulder Badge to Pokémon Trainers who defeated him in battle.
After meeting Ash and giving him the Boulder Badge, Brock joins the Pokémon Trainer on his journey, soon joined by Misty.
Brock’s trademark characteristics include being a caring Pokémon breeder, falling in love with every woman he meets, and his always-closed eyes.
Brock is a fundamental part of the hero group and has been with us for the longest time. Even now that he’s no longer on another adventurous journey with Ash and co, he remains a staple character for the iconic anime.
4) Yahaba
Anime: Demon Slayer
Yahaba is a demon, killing people and wreaking havoc in the hope of becoming one of the Twelve Kizuki. He is very loyal to his master, Muzan Kibutsuji, and tries his best to gain his approval.
Along with fellow demon, Susamaru, he acts as the antagonist for the Asukusa Arc of Demon Slayer, only to be slayed by Tanjiro Kamado.
As a demon, Yahaba’s appearance differs from that of a normal human. He has strange red-colored cat eyes, which he normally keeps closed, fulfilling his need for vision through the pair of eyes on his palms.
These palm eyes allow him incredible sensing abilities that let him accurately track footprints. His Blood Demon Art, Kotetsu Arrow, is also connected to the palm eyes.
5) Nunnally vi Britannia
Anime: Code Geass
Nunnally Lamperouge, originally named Nunnally vi Britannia, is a princess of the Britannian Empire and the younger sister of Lelouch vi Britannia.
Nunnally is a sweet young girl who has suffered a lot in her life, from her mother being assassinated to getting her legs paralyzed by a bullet wound.
On top of that, she was made to believe herself as blind under the influence of her father, Charles’ Geass.
Due to thinking that she was blind, Nunnally always kept her eyes closed until she finally overcame Charles’ Geass during the Battle of Mt. Fuji.
Nunnally is Lelouch’s most precious person and his main inspiration for overthrowing the Britannian Empire and making the world a better place. Her beautiful and loving bond with her brother is a core element of the story, and it makes her a sympathetic and enduring character.
6) Zange Natsume
Anime: Inu x Boku
Like his fellow residents of Maison de Ayakashi, Zange Natsume is a half-yokai half-human, meaning he has ancestors from both the demon and human races.
He is the Secret Service (SS) Agent of Banri Watanuki, with whom he’s been friends since childhood. Natsume is a Hyakume or a 100-eyed demon, a fact he’s been burdened with all his life.
With his red hair, bandage-covered eye, and bunny ears, Natsume keeps his eye closed in a cheerful manner. With his looks, partnered with his jovial attitude and a habit of calling his friends’ cutesy nicknames, he quickly becomes an endearing character.
Also, the fact that he is voiced by Mamoru Miyano doesn’t hurt either.

Anime: Black Butler
Lau is a Chinese nobleman and the British branch manager of Kong-Rong, the Shanghai trading company. His role also includes being the top official of Qīng Bāng, the Chinese syndicate, an operator of opium dens, as well as an Aristocrat of Evil.
Lau works closely with Ciel Phantomhive and heeds his every order to make sure to conduct his business in the British underworld without any trouble.
Lau is an enigmatic man who keeps the mask of being a well-informed man without that being the truth every time. He remains placid and mild-mannered in nature but never fails to make jesting comments.
He’s very close with his assistant, Ran-Mao, whom he addresses as a sister. With his closed eyes and tongue-in-cheek nature, Lau is one of the many interesting characters in Black Butler.
8) Leonardo Watch
Anime: Blood Blockade Battlefront
Leonardo Watch is the primary protagonist of Blood Blockade Battlefront. He’s a 19 years old photographer who is thrust into the world of chaos and mayhem after he is given the All Seeing Eyes of the Gods by Riga El Menuhyut at the price of his wheelchair-bound sister, Michella’s eyes when he comes to Hellsalem’s Lot to help her.
Leonardo always keeps his eyes closed to cover the All Seeing Eyes of the Gods.
The eyes are all-powerful in nature and grant him a number of amazing superhuman powers, including heightened visual senses, the ability to share what he sees with others and alter the vision of those around him as well as the power to see the “Truth” of the world.

Archangel Ludociel is another character who always keeps his eyes shut. He is the leader of the Four Archangels, the strongest members of the Goddess Clan, as well as the leader of the group Stigma, which is an alliance between the Goddess Clan, the Fairy Clan, the Giant Clan, and humans to fight against the Demon Clan.

Lucoa is a pretty laid-back character with a penchant for flirtation. She is always seen with a smile on her face and is kind and nurturing to her fellow dragons.
She is also quite manipulative, as shown when she uses her body to get what she wants. Along with wavy blonde hair and horns that are the signature of her race, Lucoa also has heterochromia with both different colored irises and pupils in her eyes which she mostly keeps shut.
11) Komugi
Anime: Hunter x Hunter
Komugi comes into the story of Hunter x Hunter as an insignificant minor character who soon turns into the soul of the Chimera Ant Arc.
Komugi is the best Gungi player in the world and the current World Champion, as well as a resident of the Republic of East Gorteau. She is brought to Meruem to play against the Chimera Ant King to pass his time.
Komugi is a blind girl with an unkempt appearance who seems to be unable to take care of herself. At first, she appears pathetic to Meruem, but soon her talents are revealed when they finally begin playing Gungi.
Being blind, Komugi always has her eyes closed, but when she’s playing, she finally opens her unseeing eyes. Her innocence, along with her role in the change of Meruem’s character, makes her such a lovable character.

Yoshimura is the man who helps Kaneki after the young man is brutally shoved into the cruel world of Ghouls. Yoshimura is the manager of Anteiku and is later revealed to be an SSS-rated Ghoul.
He is also the father of Eto Yoshimura, infamously known as the One-Eyed Owl, whom he tried to protect from the CCG by taking the same moniker.
Yoshimura is a very kind old man who tries to help Ghouls who can’t bring themselves to kill humans to feed. Thanks to kindness, young Ghouls like Touka, Hinami, and Kaneki have a place to live safely and belong.
He’s also an extremely powerful Ghoul, as evident by his ranking in the CCG standards. Yoshimura’s eyes are typically that of a Ghoul’s, and he doesn’t open his eyes unless he needs to.
13) Ranpo Edogawa
Anime: Bungou Stray Dogs
Ranpo Edogawa is a member of the Armed Detective Agency and the self-proclaimed best detective. He is a highly intelligent man who solves difficult cases with staggering efficiency, with the help of what he believes is a special ability.
However, it is soon shown that Ranpo doesn’t have that ability. Instead, he solves the cases all by himself with his own wit. It leads to Ranpo seeming like a delusional man, but once again, we’re thrown out of the loop to see that Rando is, in reality, aware of his lack of ability.
Despite being so brilliant, Ranpo is pretty incompetent in everyday life. He slacks off at work and spends most of his time sleeping or eating candies.
He also always has his eyes closed for no particular reason and only opens his green eyes when he’s particularly smart. His intelligence and his childlike manners are actually quite adorable.
14) Ling Yao
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Ling Yao is the twelfth prince of the Eastern Nation Xing and the heir of the Yao Clan, who comes to Amestris in search of the secret of immortality to present to his emperor.
He is joined in this adventure by his kinsmen Fu and Lan Fan. After coming to Ametris, Ling Yao meets and befriends the Elric brothers and is soon tangled in the bloody conspiracy of the Homunculus and the Amestris military in his journey to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone.
Ling Yao’s laid-back and comical attitude belies his strong sense of responsibility and honor. Like Edward, he also wants to protect his loved ones and is prepared to go to great lengths to ensure that.
He’s also a very brave and ambitious man, and his greed is a significant part of him. Ling Yao’s eyes are always closed, and they only open when he is merged with the Homunculus Greed.
15) Gin Ichimaru
Anime: Bleach
Gin Ichimaru is the most enigmatic character in Bleach. He’s the Captain of the 3rd Squad of Gotei 13 and a Shinigami with unrefutable genius.
Ichimaru’s introduction in the story makes it clear that he cannot be trusted and that there is something sinister going on that he’s a part of.
That soon proves to be true when he betrays Gotei 13 and joins Aizen at the end of the Soul Society Arc.
Ichimaru later proves himself to be a wildcard in the story when he turns on Aizen and reveals his true goal from the beginning. His eyes, which remain closed throughout the series, finally open, and we get to know the whole character of the ever-mysterious Shinigami.
The aura of mystery surrounding him, his cool personality, and his powerful Zanpakuto already made him an interesting character to look out for, but the twist his loyalty provides at the end easily makes him one of the best characters of the series.
