Simon comes across a peculiar item (Gunmen) while exploring the grounds one day, which turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artifact of war, which the two named Lagann. Soon after, a massive Gunmen falls through the ceiling and begins attacking the village, followed by a girl named Yoko, who tries to repel the Gunmen. 

Simon activates the Gunmen and its skill with his Core Drill. He successfully used it to defeat the bigger Gunmen and to penetrate the ceiling, allowing him and Kamina to reach the surface world. Yoko informs Simon and Kamina that humanity on the surface is attacked every day by Gunmen flown by Beastmen, humanoid beings who serve as Lordgenome’s army. 

Kamina hijacks a Gunmen and calls it Gurren before merging it with Lagann to produce the robot, Gurren Lagann. Their acts motivate other humans to take their own Gunmen and join Team Gurren, causing Kamina to rename the team Dai-Gurren. Simon and Kamina, two friends, become icons for revolting against the oppressive Spiral King, who has forced people into subterranean communities.
