Scotland has a habit of looking dramatic on screen, even when nothing particularly dramatic is happening. A quiet road can stretch into the Highlands, an old pub can become the centre of a story, and Edinburgh can feel like an entirely different character.
Of course, there are also castles, clan feuds, royal scandals and the occasional monster. But Scottish cinema has plenty to offer beyond the familiar imagery.
These 16 movies about Scotland bring together historical epics, dark folklore, offbeat comedies and modern stories from cities, islands and the countryside.
16 Iconic Movies About Scotland
If three films could give you three very different Scotlands, these would make a pretty good starting point.
1. Braveheart (1995)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Mel Gibson |
| Genre | Historical, War, Drama, Epic |
| Runtime | 2h 58m |
| IMDb score | 8.3/10 |
If Scotland had a movie trailer designed to make tourists buy a plane ticket, Braveheart might be it. Mel Gibson’s epic turns William Wallace into a larger-than-life symbol of Scottish independence, with sweeping landscapes and battles built for the biggest screen possible.
The history is wildly romanticized, but the spectacle is hard to deny. Just don’t use it as your history textbook.
2. Trainspotting (1996)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Danny Boyle |
| Genre | Crime, Drama, Dark Comedy |
| Runtime | 1h 34m |
| IMDb score | 8.1/10 |
This is Scotland without the postcard filter. Trainspotting throws you into Edinburgh with a group of friends whose idea of a good plan usually ends badly.
It is filthy, funny, frantic and occasionally brutal. The soundtrack is phenomenal, too. If you want to see why this became one of the defining British films of the 1990s, start here.
3. Local Hero (1983)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Bill Forsyth |
| Genre | Comedy, Drama |
| Runtime | 1h 51m |
| IMDb score | 7.3/10 |
Local Hero is wonderfully odd without trying too hard to be quirky. Its sleepy pace, eccentric locals, and gorgeous coastline make it feel like a place you might actually want to disappear to for a while.
Historical Movies Set in Scotland
Scottish history has no shortage of material for a good movie. There are kings, rebels, stolen treasures, and more political intrigue than anyone really needs.
4. Rob Roy (1995)
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Michael Caton-Jones |
| Genre | Historical, Adventure, Drama |
| Runtime | 2h 19m |
| IMDb score | 6.9/10 |
Rob Roy has all the ingredients of a classic Highland adventure, but it is far more interested in character than simply waving swords around. Liam Neeson gives Rob Roy a grounded presence, while Tim Roth is wonderfully unpleasant as the film’s slippery villain.
5. Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Josie Rourke |
| Genre | Historical, Drama, Biography |
| Runtime | 2h 4m |
| IMDb score | 6.3/10 |
Mary Stuart’s life already sounds like a screenplay that got slightly out of hand. This movie focuses on her complicated relationship with Elizabeth I, while political pressure closes in around her from every direction.
6. The 39 Steps (1935)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Alfred Hitchcock |
| Genre | Mystery, Thriller, Romance |
| Runtime | 1h 26m |
| IMDb score | 7.6/10 |
A man gets caught up in a murder mystery and suddenly finds himself running across Scotland with half the country seemingly after him. Alfred Hitchcock turns the Scottish landscape into part of the chase, moving from London into a wonderfully tense series of escapes.
7. Stone of Destiny (2008)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Charles Martin Smith |
| Genre | Historical, Comedy, Drama |
| Runtime | 1h 36m |
| IMDb score | 6.7/10 |
In Stone of Destiny, a group of young Scottish nationalists decides to take the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey in 1950. The result is part political story, part caper, and considerably more mischievous than the subject might suggest.
Movies on Scottish Folklore, Fantasy and Mystery
Scotland gets even more interesting once reality takes a back seat. These films bring in ancient legends, eerie traditions, immortals, and one very determined Scottish princess.
8. The Wicker Man (1973)
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Robin Hardy |
| Genre | Horror, Mystery, Thriller |
| Runtime | 1h 28m |
| IMDb score | 7.5/10 |
A police officer travels to a remote Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. At first, the islanders seem perfectly pleasant, but something about their behaviour never quite sits right.
The Wicker Man lets that unease build slowly, using the island’s isolated setting and ancient rituals to make the landscape itself feel increasingly threatening.
9. Highlander (1986)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Russell Mulcahy |
| Genre | Action, Fantasy, Adventure |
| Runtime | 1h 56m |
| IMDb score | 7.0/10 |
Connor MacLeod is from the Scottish Highlands, has been alive for centuries, and has spent much of that time getting very good with a sword. That’s about as sensible as Highlander gets.
The film jumps between medieval Scotland and 1980s New York, building its own mythology as it goes.
10. Brave (2012)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman |
| Genre | Animation, Adventure, Fantasy, Family |
| Runtime | 1h 33m |
| IMDb score | 7.1/10 |
Brave uses its Highland setting for more than scenery, filling the story with clan traditions, old legends, and a distinctly Scottish sense of place. Beneath all the magic and archery is the difficult relationship between a daughter determined to choose her own path and a mother who wants to protect her.
Movies That Capture Everyday Scottish Life
Scotland looks different when the castles drop out of frame. These films are more interested in schoolyards, pubs, music, work, and the people who actually live there.
11. Gregory’s Girl (1982)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Bill Forsyth |
| Genre | Comedy, Romance |
| Runtime | 1h 31m |
| IMDb score | 7.1/10 |
Gregory’s Girl finds comedy in the awkwardness of being a teenager. Gregory develops a crush on Dorothy, the new girl at school, and quickly discovers that romance is rather harder than it looks.
The film’s small-town Scottish setting feels natural rather than carefully staged, which gives its everyday moments much of their charm.
12. The Angels’ Share (2012)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Ken Loach |
| Genre | Comedy, Drama |
| Runtime | 1h 41m |
| IMDb score | 7.0/10 |
Robbie is trying to stay out of trouble when he discovers he has an unusually good nose for whisky. Soon, a rare cask starts looking like a possible way out of his dead-end life.
The Angels’ Share mixes a whisky caper with working-class Glasgow, giving the story plenty of warmth without pretending Robbie’s problems will disappear overnight.
13. Wild Rose (2018)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Tom Harper |
| Genre | Drama, Music |
| Runtime | 1h 41m |
| IMDb score | 7.1/10 |
Rose-Lynn wants Nashville, a country-music career and a life far bigger than Glasgow. Unfortunately, reality has other plans.
Jessie Buckley gives her enough swagger, recklessness, and vulnerability to make Rose-Lynn impossible to neatly judge. The music is a big part of the appeal, but the Glasgow setting keeps Wild Rose grounded in a much messier reality than the usual “follow your dreams” story.
14. Whisky Galore! (1949)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Alexander Mackendrick |
| Genre | Comedy |
| Runtime | 1h 22m |
| IMDb score | 7.1/10 |
A ship carrying thousands of cases of whisky runs aground off a small Scottish island, and suddenly the locals have a very tempting problem on their hands. Whisky Galore! turns a real wartime incident into a wonderfully mischievous comedy about a community trying to outsmart the authorities.
Modern Movies About Scotland
These modern films have more contemporary characters and problems, but they still offer some memorable Scottish settings along the way.
15. The Outrun (2024)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Nora Fingscheidt |
| Genre | Drama |
| Runtime | 1h 58m |
| IMDb score | 6.9/10 |
Rona returns to the Orkney Islands after years away, but coming home does not magically make everything better. The wild, exposed landscape becomes an uncomfortable contrast to the life she is trying to rebuild.
Saoirse Ronan is excellent in the quieter moments, making The Outrun feel raw and intimate rather than like another scenic movie about Scotland.
16. Our Ladies (2019)
Watch it on Amazon Prime Video
| Information | Detail |
| Director | Michael Caton-Jones |
| Genre | Comedy, Drama |
| Runtime | 1h 47m |
| IMDb score | 6.7/10 |
Imagine being handed a trip to Edinburgh with your school choir and deciding that singing should be the least important part of it. That’s roughly the attitude of Our Ladies.
Five Highland teenagers spend a chaotic day in the city, getting into trouble and testing every bit of freedom they can find. It is funny, scruffy, and far less well-behaved than its choir premise suggests.
Put Braveheart next to Trainspotting, and you could be forgiven for wondering if they were filmed in the same country. Add Whisky Galore!, The Wicker Man, Gregory’s Girl and The Outrun, and the differences become even more obvious.
Scotland is heroic in one film, ridiculous in another, and quietly heartbreaking somewhere else. That unpredictability may be the most Scottish thing about this whole list.
Writer. Dreamer. Journalist (maybe?). Anime lover (definitely). I turn curiosity into stories and everyday life into a narrative worth reading.
