The overwhelming popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen is a product of many aspects: the intriguing plot, the exciting power system, the jaw-dropping fight scenes, and the brilliantly written characters. One of the main characters of the story is Nobara Kugisaki, a first-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. In this article, we’ll be discussing the power of Nobara Kugisaki in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Before we really get into it, we must issue a spoiler alert warning for those who aren’t caught up with the manga. The anime is currently at the beginning of the Shibuya Incident Arc in which Nobara will be playing a crucial role. So, before that happens, let’s see what she is capable of.

Power Of Nobara Kugisaki in Jujutsu Kaisen
Nobara Kugisaki joins the first-year class in Tokyo Jujutsu High alongside Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro. She comes from a jujutsu sorcerer family and enrolls in the school under her grandmother’s recommendation. That means unlike Yuji who enters the world of jujutsu after the fateful encounter with Megumi that day, Nobara has always been aware of jujutsu and her power.
She is a Grade 3 sorcerer, though it has more to do with her inexperience as a jujutsu sorcerer rather than her capabilities. Nobara is knowledgeable about cursed spirits and how to exorcize them and uses her knowledge to focus on her strengths to give her best performance. Another thing that makes Nobara great at what she does is the fact that she knows her limitations and weaknesses.
Nobara shows great potential as a jujutsu sorcerer and has shown again and again that when the situation calls for it, she’s capable of rising above her grade to fight some really powerful opponents. In the Shibuya Incident Arc, she shows herself capable of using her wits and cursed technique with equal proficiency.
I. Cursed Energy Reserve
While not quite on par with her classmates, Nobara does have an impressive cursed energy reserve. She channels her cursed energy through her selected cursed objects: nails and hammers. Nobara infused her nails with her cursed energy to use them as long-ranged weapons during battle and cursed spirit exorcism.
The highest number of nails she can infuse her cursed energy into hasn’t been revealed. But she has done so numerous times effortlessly without any physical strain or exhausting her cursed energy reserve. That means she possesses enough cursed energy to expend it into numerous attacks without any break.
Nobara’s proficiency in cursed energy increases when she unlocks Black Flash and channels the core of cursed energy within her.
II. Black Flash
One of the strongest techniques a jujutsu sorcerer can use is the Black Flash. However, it’s not a technique that anybody can use. In fact, only a small number of exceptional jujutsu sorcerers have been able to unlock Black Flash and Nobara is one of them.
Black Flash is achieved when the jujutsu sorcerer lands a cursed energy-infused attack with such force that the impact creates a spatial distortion within the span of 0.000001 seconds of the physical impact. The effect of the attack causes the cursed energy used in the attack to flash black, hence the name of the technique. The impact of Black Flash is 2.5 times stronger than a normal cursed energy-infused attack.Â
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Nobara achieves the Black Flash during the fight between Yuji and her vs. Eso and Kechizu. Her Black Flash sends Kechizu to a near-death state.
III. Straw Doll Technique
Nobara’s innate cursed technique is the Straw Doll Technique. It’s still unknown whether she inherited this technique from her grandmother. In this technique, Nobara infused her cursed energy into nails and a hammer to use them as her primary weapons. The cursed energy-infused nails are able to levitate in air which makes it easier for her to hit them with her hammer and aim them at her target.
Along with the nails and the hammer, Nobara also uses a straw doll in a technique that resembles voodoo. She makes a connection with her target by adding a part of the target to the straw hat. After that, for every hit that the doll suffers the target suffers too. The more prominent part she attaches to the doll, the stronger and more lethal her attacks become.
For example, if she attaches any small body part of the target to the doll, she can attack the target’s crucial organs like the heart and lungs. In most cases, however, she attaches the most expendable part of the target: hair.
This technique has a few variations, all of them very effective against opponents.
IV. Resonance
One of the variations of the Straw Doll Technique, Resonance is a powerful technique in which Nobara uses a severed body part of the target to the straw doll to establish a link to her own cursed energy. After the link is established, she can target any part of the opponent and cause black spikes to suddenly protrude out of the opponent’s body.
Nobara uses this technique lethally against Eso during the Death Painting Arc.
V. Hairpin
The second variation of the Straw Doll Technique is Hairpin. In this technique, she doesn’t need to use her straw doll, instead focuses all of her cursed energy into the nails. She hammers the nails toward the target, and as the nails imbue on or near the target, they explode forcefully. The explosion is then responsible for the cursed energy around it to expand, making it much more lethal than before.
Nobara uses this technique against both Momo Nishimiya and Kechizu.
VI. Cursed Tools
As previously stated, Nobara in Jujutsu Kaisen channels her cursed energy into physical objects for offensive purposes. Her choice of weapons are nails and a hammer. She uses these cursed tools to perform her innate cursed technique: the Straw Doll Technique.
To use the cursed technique, Nobara always keeps the following cursed tools with her:
- Nails: She imbues her cursed energy into the nails before aiming them towards her opponent.
- Hammer: She uses the hammer to hit the nails towards her opponent.
- Straw doll: She uses the straw doll to establish a link between herself and the opponent by attaching a part of the opponent to the doll.
- Rubber mullet: She always keeps a rubber mullet with her to use against humans instead of cursed spirits. Nobara uses the mullet against Momo during the Tokyo Goodwill Event Arc.
