This was also responsible for giving a heart to Kanade Tachibana, one of the girls in the afterlife.

Mikoto Suoh was the former King as well as the leader of the villainous organization in the anime, Hombre. Even if he was an antagonist, he only did what he could, for Japan as well as Hombre.
He had deliberately wanted Reisi to stab himself so that he could end this once and for all. Mikoto had to be killed, as the Sword of Damocles should not be allowed to touch the ground.
Had it touched the ground, it would have been destroyed on a very large scale. So, Mikoto went into this battle, fully well knowing that he would die to protect his friends.

Isaac Netero was the Chairman of the Hunter Association and was also a very powerful individual. However, he still lost against Meruem, the King of Chimera Ants, in the series.

He took Akainu’s blow, which was intended for Luffy, saving him in the process. Due to this, Ace was gravely wounded, and in his dying moments, he thanked Luffy for everything he did.
2) Rengoku Kyojuro

Kyojuro Rengoku was the Flame Hashira and was also one of the strongest Hashiras. During his mission to investigate the Infinity train, he suddenly meets an Upper-Rank Demon Akaza.
Knowing fully well that he is outmatched and that he may die, Rengoku still chose to fight with Akaza. Even if he lost his life, he was still able to complete his mission of saving all of the humans on the train.
He held on long enough, so that the sun rose, and Akaza had no other option left, but to flee. But, he was already gravely wounded in this fight, and passed away, a few moments later.

Lelouch is the protagonist of Code Geass, who wanted to abolish the ruling system of his parents. He was successful in his goal too, by the end of the series. Lelouch managed to become the King of Britannia too.
However, he still knew that he will not be able to protect his friends and sister in this way. He made the people hate his rule, and ended all of the hatred, along with his own life.
Lelouch asked Suzaku to kill him in front of the very people that despised him. Due to this, he was able to save his friends as well as his sister.
