One Piece has a huge cast of hundreds of characters. Some of them are powerful, and some leave much to desire. But even among the strong ones, there are those whose massive powers make the series and fights more exhilarating. Today, we’ll be talking about 20 One Piece strongest characters.
For this list, we’re taking every character in their prime state, not in the state they’re introduced to in the story. For example, Gol D. Roger is an amazingly strong man in his prime, but he was introduced in the series as a man battling a disease and about to be executed. Another point is that we’ll be setting aside rumoredly powerful characters like Monkey D. Dragon, who has yet to show his powers in the story.
With that done, let’s get into the 20 One Piece Strongest Characters ranking without further ado.

20) Charlotte Katakuri
Charlotte Katakuri is the 2nd son of Big Mom and the 1st commander of Big Mom Pirates. Katakuri is a very strong man, evidenced by his position, and it took Luffy everything and more to defeat him.
He ate the Mochi Mochi no Mi, which is actually a Paramecia but was thought to be a Logia. His Devil Fruit gives him the powers of mochi, capable of elongating as much as he wants, similar to but better than Luffy’s rubber powers.
Katakuri also has Haoshoku, Busoshoku, and advanced Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows him to see 15 seconds into the future.
19) Benn Beckman
Benn Beckman is the first mate of the Red Hair Pirates. He is a man feared for his powers and intelligence. As of yet, there isn’t much evidence of Beckman’s powers since he has never been in a battle in the story.
But he pointed his gun at Kizaru during the end of the Marineford War and stopped the Admiral on his feet. This gives the impression that he’s a gunman and strong enough to antagonize someone powerful like Kizaru. Though being the first mate of a Yonko is proof enough of his powers.
18) Roronoa Zoro
Roronoa Zoro is a member of the Straw Hat Pirates who aspires to become the strongest swordsman in the world. He’s one of the Supernovas and trained under Mihawk for two years during the time skip.
Zoro is a master swordsman who is steadily progressing toward his dream. User of the three-swords style, he wields three swords: Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Enma.
He is capable of using all three kinds of Haki, with his Haoshoku first noted by Kaido. Even after being able to Haoshoku for a short period of time, Zoro is able to master it and infuse it in his swords.
17) Eustass Kid
Eustass Kid is the captain of Kid Pirates and one of the Supernovas. He, along with Law, defeated Big Mom during the conclusive battle on Onigashima.
Kid possesses the powers of Jiki Jiki no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, which gives him the powers of a magnet and allows him to manipulate every metal around him.
He is also able to use all three types of Haki. During their fight against Big Mom, Kid awakens his Devil Fruit and becomes one of the very few characters in the series with awakened Devil Fruits.
16) Trafalgar D. Water Law
Trafalgar D. Water Law is the captain of Heart Pirates, who enters into an alliance with Luffy and Kin’emon to defeat Kaido. As a child, he was a member of the Donquixote Family.
Law ate the Ope Ope no Mi, a Paramecia-type and one of the strongest and most unique Devil Fruits in the series. The Ope Ope no Mi gives him the power to make a certain area his operation table by “Room” and operate everything in it as he wishes.
He’s also capable of using Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki. He also awakened his Devil Fruit during the battle against Big Mom alongside Kid.
15) Kozuki Oden (Prime)
Kozuki Oden was a daimyo of Wano who sailed through the sea with Whitebeard and joined Gol D. Roger on his final voyage to Laugh Tale.
Oden was an extremely skilled swordsman who wielded two powerful swords, Enma and Ame no Habakiri. Enma, in particular, is a difficult sword to master, as seen when Zoro was having trouble controlling it.
Oden was also capable of all three types of Haki and advanced Busoshoku Haki. He was one of the very few men to have wounded Kaido and given him a scar.
14) Marco
Marco was the commander of the First Division of Whitebeard Pirates. He fought against the Marines in the Marineford War to save Ace. He’s also a doctor who joined the fight against Kaido and Big Mom in Wano.
Marco has the power of Tori Tori no Mi: Model Phoenix, which is a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. With this Devil Fruit, Marco can transform into the mythical phoenix bird shrouded with blue flames.Â
He also has a hybrid form and can transform any part of his body skillfully. The blue flames of his are very regenerative and can heal any wound dealt to him. Marco can also use Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki.
13) Kuzan
Kuzan, also known as Aokiji, was once a Marine Admiral who fought in the Marineford War against the Whitebeard Pirates. He fought against Akainu for the post of Fleet Admiral and ultimately lost after seven days of intense battle. After leaving the Marines, he joined Blackbeard Pirates.
As a former Admiral, it is pretty clear that Kuzan is one of the strongest characters of One Piece. He has the powers of Hie Hie no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit, which gives him the powers of ice.Â
He is capable of freezing vast lands and large portions of the sea as well as small, minute things. His power level is comparable to Akainu’s. Kuzan is able to use Kenbunshoku and advanced Busoshoku Haki.
12) Sakazuki
Sakazuki, also known as Akainu, was a Marine Admiral who became the Fleet Admiral of the Marines after Sengoku’s retirement. He fought in the Marineford War and was responsible for killing Ace.
Sakazuki ate the Magu Magu no Mi, a very powerful Logia Devil Fruit, which gave him the powers of magma. It is superior to Ace’s Hono Hono no Mi, proven when Sakazuki’s magma overpowered Ace’s fire.
Sakazuki’s Logia powers also mean that his body is invulnerable to every attack, not imbued with Haki. He is also capable of using advanced Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki.
11) Marshall D. Teach
Marshall D. Teach, or Blackbeard, as he’s more popularly known, is the captain of the Blackbeard Pirates and currently one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. He was once a member of the Whitebeard Pirates, whom he betrayed.
Blackbeard’s powers are shrouded in mystery. He has an extremely powerful Logia Devil Fruit, Yami Yami no Mi, which gives him the powers of darkness.
Shockingly, he was able to steal Whitebeard’s powers of Gura Gura no Mi, which is an impossible task since if an individual consumes more than one Devil Fruit, they die. Blackbeard can also use Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku Haki.
10) Dracule Mihawk
Dracule Mihawk is the strongest swordsman in the world. He was once a Shichibukai and, before that, a rival of Shanks. He’s currently a member of Cross Guild alongside Crocodile and Buggy.
Mihawk is a master swordsman who is known as Hawk-Eye for his keen eyes. He wields the black sword, Yoru, which is said to be the strongest sword in the world.
Mihawk’s swordsmanship is on the level where the sword doesn’t matter in front of his skills. He’s also very proficient in Kenbunshoku Haki as well as Busoshoku Haki, as he was the one to teach Haki to Zoro.
9) Shanks
Shanks is one of the Four Emperors of the Sea and is infamous in the world as Red-haired Shanks. He’s known Luffy since the latter was a child and was the one to inspire him to become the King of Pirates. He’s also the one to give Luffy his straw hat.
Not much is known about Shanks’ powers, but he’s undoubtedly one of the strongest characters in the series. He is not a Devil Fruit user, and his powers primarily rely on his Haki.
Shanks is proficient in all three kinds of Haki, but his Haoshoku is the strongest in the world. His Haoshoku is so powerful that he can control his presence in a way that others’ Kenbunshoku can’t read him. That’s just the tip of the iceberg that is Shanks’ powers.
8) Silvers Rayleigh (Prime)
Silvers Rayleigh was the first mate of Roger Pirates and a close friend of the Pirate King. He is also Luffy’s teacher, who taught him Haki and guided him during the timeskip.
As the first mate of the pirate king, Rayleigh must have been very strong in his prime. Though, as a retired pirate, he showed enough skills to inspire amazement.
He is one of the very few characters who can use all three types of Haki. Rayleigh is also very physically capable and has high reflexes. He’s fast enough to intercept Kizaru, who has the speed of light.
7) Charlotte Linlin
Charlotte Linlin, or Big Mom, as she was infamously known, was the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. She made an alliance with Kaido to crush the Supernovas once and for all.
Big Mom was a very powerful pirate whose strength was on par with the rest of the Emperors. She consumed the Soru Soru no Mi, a Paramecia-type Fruit that gives her the power to extract souls from the people afraid of her.
She can also deposit the collected soul into an object to give it life. A user of all three types of Haki, she has a particularly formidable Haoshoku. Big Mom also has a pet cloud and sun, which aid her in battle.
6) Kaido
Kaido was known as the strongest creature in the world. He was the captain of the Beast Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the Sea.
Kaido possesses one of the strongest Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruits: Uo Uo no Mi: Model Ryu, which transforms him into a huge azure dragon. In addition to the dragon form, Kaido also has a hybrid form which is his most powerful form.
He can also use all three types of Haki, and his Haoshoku is just as strong as Big Mom’s. Additionally, Kaido has impenetrable skin, which has been wounded by very few people.
5) Sengoku (Prime)
Sengoku was the Fleet Admiral of the Marines who fought in the Marineford War against the Whitebeard Pirates.Â
Sengoku ate the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Daibutsu, a Mythical Zoan Fruit that allows him to transform into a giant golden Buddha. Like Kaido, Sengoku also has a hybrid form where his powers exponentially increase. He can also use all three types of Haki.
4) Monkey D. Garp (Prime)
Monkey D. Garp is Luffy’s grandfather and Dragon’s father. He’s a Vice-Admiral of the Marines who is known as the hero of Marines. Garp was Roger’s contemporary and acted as a rival to the Pirate King.
Garp is a legend among the Marines. It has been stated that he had been offered the role of an Admiral several times, but he declined the offer. That means even in his old age.
His powers equal or even surpass those of the current Admirals’. Another evidence of his strength is his rivalry with Gol D. Roger. Garp is also one of the few users of all three kinds of Haki.
3) Edward Newgate (Prime)
Edward Newgate, more famously known as Whitebeard, was the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. He was known as the strongest man in the world and was a contemporary and rival of Gol D. Roger.
Whitebeard was the possessor of Gura Gura no Mi, the strongest Paramecia Devil Fruit. It allowed him to create tremors capable of causing earthquakes and tsunamis.
He was also one of the few characters to master every kind of Haki, with his Haoshoku being comparable to Roger and later Shanks.
2) Gol D. Roger
Gol D. Roger was the man who conquered the seas and was known as the King of Pirates. He was also the father of Ace and a rival of both Whitebeard and Garp. His last speech during his execution started the Great Era of Pirates.
Roger’s powers have not been revealed much in the story. But seeing as he is a legend and was the man to become the King of Pirates, it is undeniable how powerful he was during his prime.
He didn’t have the powers of Devil Fruits, but he was extremely proficient in Haki, and his powers rivaled those of Whitebeard and Garp.
1) Monkey D. Luffy (Sun God: Nika)
Monkey D. Luffy is the captain of Straw Hat Pirates and currently one of the Four Emperors of the Sea whose dream is to become the King of Pirates. He’s the sworn brother of Ace and Sabo as well as the son of Dragon and grandson of Garp.Â
For a long time in the story, Luffy was believed to have the powers of Gomu Gomu no Mi, a Paramecia Fruit, which gave him rubbery powers.
But during his final battle against Kaido, Luffy’s Devil Fruit is revealed to be the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika, which is a Mythical Zoan-type and the strongest Devil Fruit shown in the story yet.
The true power of Hito Hito no Mi appears in Luffy’s Gear 5 and gives him an unbelievable power where he can transform into anything his imagination allows, including a Giant. In Gear 5, he’s able to catch lightning in his hands and take on any attack on himself without much of a wound.
Aside from that, Luffy can also use three types of Haki and all of their advanced forms. Luffy’s Haoshoku is currently one of the strongest in the series. That makes Luffy the strongest One Piece character yet.

Honorable Mentions
