Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen: Powers and Abilities Explained

Kenjaku is one character whose real identity is revealed pretty late in the story but that’s what makes him such an intriguing character. He is one of the primary antagonists of the series as well as one of the strongest characters. Since he’s such a crucial part of the story, we must discuss his character. And thus, here is Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen with his powers and abilities explained.

Before we really begin this article, we issue a spoiler alert for the readers who still haven’t caught up with the manga. Only proceed if you don’t mind getting spoiled about some crucial information on Kenjaku.

Now, let’s proceed and learn all about Kenjaku and his Cursed Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen:

Who Is Kenjaku?

Who Is Kenjaku?

When Kenjaku first appears in the story, he appears as the Special Grade Curse User Suguru Geto. But thanks to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, it’s known that the real Geto is dead and whoever currently has his body is someone else. It isn’t until the Shibuya Incident Arc that Kenjaku reveals that he’s the fake Geto by opening his head and showing his brain to Satoru Gojo.

Towards the end of the arc, Choso correctly deduces that the pseudo-Geto is none other than his creator, the ancient curse user Kenjaku. It’s also revealed that Noritoshi Kamo, the hated jujutsu sorcerer of the Kamo clan, was originally Kenjaku and it was he who created the Death Paintings, not Kamo.

To sum it up, Kenjaku is an ancient curse user whose innate Cursed Technique allows him to transplant his brain into another body and possess it as his own while leaving behind his real body. Kenjaku has lived through years by using this technique and possessing numerous bodies.

Forms of Kenjaku

Over the thousand years that he’s lived, Kenjaku has possessed the bodies of numerous individuals. He usually chooses to possess those bodies that either contain powerful Cursed Techniques or serve his particular goals. In Jujutsu Kaisen, only four bodies that Kenjaku has possessed have been revealed. They are the following:

Unknown Person

Unknown Person

Around 400 years ago, Kenjaku took over the body of an unknown man. The man must have been a curse user since Kenjaku wouldn’t possess any body that doesn’t know how to use cursed energy. As this person, he made Binding Vows with a lot of curse users during that era, including Hajime Kashimo.

Kenjaku uses these Binding Vows to summon the ancient curse users and jujutsu sorcerers in the present to participate in the Culling Game.

Noritoshi Kamo

Noritoshi Kamo

An infamous character known as the most evil jujutsu sorcerer in the history of jujutsu, Noritoshi Kamo was a member of the elite Kamo clan. He’s known for conducting unethical research on a woman capable of giving birth to human-curse hybrid children. His research led to the creation of Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, from which Choso, Kechizu, and Eso.

In reality, it wasn’t Noritoshi Kamo who conducted the experiment. Rather, it was Kenjaku who transferred his brain to Noritoshi’s body and took control of it.

Kaori Itadori

Kaori Itadori

One of the most shocking reveals of Jujutsu Kaisen is that Yuji Itadori is actually the biological son of Kenjaku himself. An unknown amount of time before Yuji’s birth, Kenjaku took possession of the body of Kaori Itadori, the wife of Jin Itadori who is Yuji’s father. As Kaori, he mated with Jin and gave birth to Yuji.

It’s still unknown whether giving birth to Yuji was the true motive of Kenjaku’s possession of Kaori’s body after all. There also hasn’t been any mention of Kaori being a jujutsu sorcerer or a curse user. But given that Kenjaku possessed her body and later used her Anti-Gravity System against Yuki Tsukumo, it’s safe to assume that she knew how to use cursed energy.

Suguru Geto

Suguru Geto

The current vessel of Kenjaku is the Special Grade curse user Suguru Geto. After Geto was defeated by Yuta Okkotsu, he was presumably killed by Gojo. But due to the sentimentality for his best friend, Gojo didn’t destroy his body or cremate him. Thanks to this, Kenjaku could transfer his brain to Geto’s corpse and take over it.

Making Geto a vessel was very advantageous for Kenjaku since not only did it allow him to use Geto’s very powerful Cursed Technique but he also gained a lot of information about things like Gojo and Tokyo Jujutsu High from his memories.

Cursed Techniques of Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen

Innate Cursed Technique

Innate Cursed Technique

Kenjaku’s unnamed Innate Cursed Technique allows him to transfer his brain, and with it, his consciousness, into the body of someone else. The conditions for using this technique are still unknown. For example, it isn’t revealed yet whether the body Kenjaku possesses has to be dead or if he can use this technique on someone who can’t use cursed energy.

But what is known is that Kenjaku can use his Innate Cursed Technique on only humans and not on curses. Another condition his Cursed Technique has is that even after possessing a body and healing every wound on that body, Kenjaku must leave the horizontal scar across the face that is created during the brain transplant alone. Every one of his known vessels had the horizontal scar.

Kenjaku’s Innate Cursed Technique is an incredibly useful one. Not only does it allow him to practically live forever, but it also gives him access to the memories, abilities, and cursed techniques of his vessels. Coupled with his hundreds of years of experience, this makes Kenjaku one of the strongest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Cursed Spirit Manipulation

Cursed Spirit Manipulation

Suguru Geto was one of the most powerful curse users of his generation and one of the only four Special Grade jujutsu sorcerers in the world. His Cursed Technique, Cursed Spirit Manipulation, allowed his to absorb cursed spirits by exorcizing them and then engulfing them. After absorbing the cursed spirit, he could then add it to his collection and later summon it to use it as he wished.

After taking control of Geto’s body, Kenjaku gets access to the Cursed Spirit Manipulation. Geto already had a huge collection of curses and Kenjaku has been expanding it. He has collected even Special Grade curses like Smallpox Deity that can even use its own Domain Expansion.

Towards the end of the Shibuya Incident Arc, after Mahito is defeated and weakened by Yuji and Aoi Todo, Kenjaku absorbs the Special Grade curse.

Maximum: Uzumaki

Maximum: Uzumaki

Maximum: Uzumaki was the strongest technique of Geto and now Kenjaku, and the strongest form of Cursed Spirit Manipulation. With this technique, Kenjaku can combine all of the curses in his collection, which reach over to thousands, into one powerful curse that looks like a whirlpool.

Uzumaki is a complicated technique and is usually for one-time use only for the user. Geto used it against Yuta while Kenjaku uses this technique against Mahito to absorb him and gain access to his Idle Transfiguration.

Anti-Gravity System

Anti-Gravity System

Kenjaku uses the Anti-Gravity System during his fight against Yuki Tsukumo and Choso at the Tokyo Jujutsu High. This technique allows him to negate gravity which can lead to him being able to float in air. Another usage of the Anti-Gravity System is the curse technique reversal of it, which Kenjaku uses during to fight to increase the gravity around him to crush his opponents to the ground.

Kenjaku reveals this technique originally belonged to Kaori Itadori and he got access to it after possessing her body.

Reverse Cursed Technique

The Reverse Cursed Technique is when the user takes cursed energy and transforms it into positive energy to heal their own body and someone other’s. This technique is quite usual among cursed spirits while rare for humans. Kenjaku is one of the few curse users able to use the Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself.

He can also use the Reverse Cursed Technique to fuel his cursed technique reversals.

Domain Expansion: Womb Profusion

Domain Expansion: Womb Profusion

Kenjaku’s Domain Expansion, Womb Profusion, is one of the only two Domains introduced in the story that doesn’t have a barrier. Like Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine, Womb Profusion is also barrierless and he can expand it however he likes. The only instance in Jujutsu Kaisen when Kenjaku uses his Domain is during his fight against Yuki Tsukumo and Tengen.

Womb Profusion, when opened, gives rise to a totem poll made of grotesque cursed spirits with their heads protruding out. The heads release powerful blasts at certain intervals, but the true nature of this Domain Expansion and the effect of Kenjaku’s Cursed Technique on it are still unknown.

Extracted Technique: Idle Transfiguration

After absorbing Mahito, Kenjaku gets access to his Innate Cursed Technique: Idle Transfiguration. This technique allows him to change the shapes of people’s souls, including his own, and in turn, change their physical forms. The technique can also be used on things like barriers.

After defeating Tengen, Yuki, and Choso, Kenjaku uses Idle Transfiguration on Tengen’s barrier to begin the Culling Game.

Conclusion

We’ve reached the conclusion of our discussion on Kenjaku and his Cursed Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen. After Sukuna takes control of Megumi Fushiguro’s body, Kenjaku makes a Binding Vow with him. The terms of the Binding Vow are still unknown, but given Kenjaku’s character, he has something nefarious in mind.

We’ll only get to know what he is planning as the story progresses. So, don’t miss any chapters of the manga. You’ll find the spoilers of the chapters and many interesting pieces on Jujutsu Kaisen on Otakus’ Notes. Don’t forget to check them out.
