The world, unfortunately, has plenty of dumb people to go around and the anime world is not different either. Filled with characters who are painfully clueless to characters who are just straight-up idiots, there is a lot to be found among anime characters. We’re taking these dummies and putting them in a ranking of top 15 dumbest anime characters of all time.

15) Asta

While counting the dumbest anime characters, we have Asta in the last position of this list. Asta is the protagonist of Black Clover. He’s a teenage boy with no magical power but a big dream to become Wizard King.

Typical of a shounen protagonist, Asta is loud and brash with not a lot of brain cells in his head. He’s quite clueless too, not picking up two beautiful girls crushing on him. But unlike many characters in the list, Asta isn’t an idiot and can use his brain when needed.

14) Yui Hirasawa

Next is the adorable Yui Hirasawa, the protagonist and one of the main characters of K-On!. Yui starts a high school band called After-School Tea Time along with her friends, Mio, Ritsu and Tsumugi. She plays as the lead guitarist and main vocalist of the band.

Yui is an airhead with a fun-loving personality. Along with that, she’s particularly lazy. Yui’s grades in school are horrible in every subject except for fine arts and she’s the only one in her class to usually have to retake tests.

13) Usagi Tsukino

No magical girl anime will ever be as iconic as Sailor Moon. Our heroine is none other than Usagi Tsukino, a teenage girl who discovers her power as a Guardian of love and justice, becoming her alter ego, Sailor Moon. 

Usagi is rather dimwitted and sometimes very whiny. She consistently gets low marks in school and is bad at anything delicate. Usagi can also be rather airheaded and clueless. But behind all this, she’s a kind person and an awesome fighter.

12) Tobio Kageyama

Tobio Kageyama is the deuteragonist and one of the main characters of the popular sports anime, Haikyuu!!. He’s an indoor volleyball player and plays setter in the volleyball team of Karasuno High School. Along with his teammate, Hinata, Kageyama makes up the “freak duo” of the team.

Unlike many characters in this list, Kageyama is a genius. The talent at volleyball and his natural instinct for the sport is overwhelmingly superior to most. But he’s actually a really dumb guy at everything that is not volleyball, be it studies or social skills.

11) Naruto Uzumaki

Naruto Uzumaki needs little introduction. He’s the protagonist and eponymous character of the iconic shounen series, Naruto.

A ninja from Konohagakure, Naruto has suffered a horrible childhood with a sealed beast inside him but he overcame his trauma to become the strongest ninja in the world and the Hokage of his village.

Like some of the other characters in the list of dumbest anime characters of all time, Naruto is talented in his skill but his general smartness cannot be counted.

He’s rather slow in most things and particularly clueless. But truthfully, a lot of his cluelessness comes from the lack of attention he got in his childhood.

10) Gon Freecss

Up next is Gon Freecss from Hunter x Hunter. He’s the protagonist of the series and one of the main characters in most arcs. Gon is a Hunter who’s been looking for his father with his best friend, Killua.

While not an absolute idiot, Gon is certainly not the brightest bulb in a room. He’s shown to be bad with math and struggles to understand complicated plans. It’s a continuing gag in the series as his friends, particularly Killua, gets exasperated at his friend’s dumbness.

9) Taiju Oki

Taiju Oki is another good guy who is also one of the dumbest anime characters of all time. He’s been the best friend of Senku since their childhood. Along with the rest of the world, Taiju was petrified and was later petrified by Senku, waking up in a world of stones.

Taiju is a classic meathead. He’s big and strong but when it comes to intelligence, he’s the exact opposite of Senku. He’s also very simple-minded and trusting but can be trusted to keep a secret and go along with a plan. 

8) Natsu Dragneel

As we’ve seen so far in this list, shounen protagonists don’t tend to be very smart. That is true for Natsu Dragneel too. A mage from the famous guild Fairy Tail, Natsu is looking for his adoptive father with his trusted cat companion, Happy at tow.

Natsu is that one character who’s willing to put anything in his mouth, be it food or fire. He’s also brash and short-sighted, preferring to act before thinking. The guy is also incredibly slow but he’s much better than the rest of the characters on this list.

7) Yui Komori

Protagonist of the vampire romance series, Diabolic Lovers, Yui Komori is undoubtedly one of the dumbest anime characters of all time. She comes to live with six brothers after her father leaves the country. Later, much to her horror, she discovers them to be vampires.

Not only is Yui incredibly dumb but she also doesn’t have a personality at all. Even after learning their true nature as vampires, she doesn’t do the smart thing and leave, rather stays with them and is humiliated and abused on a daily basis. On top of that, she claims to love one of her abusers, Ayato. If that isn’t stupidity, what is?

6) Aqua

For our next entry of dumbest anime characters, we have Aqua, one of the main characters of KonoSuba. She’s the goddess who was in charge of Kazuma’s reincarnation in a new magical world. After mocking him for his hilariously shameful demise, Kazuma chooses her to be his companion in the fantasy world.

Before choosing a goddess, Kazuma had no idea that Aqua would turn out to be absolutely useless at everything but party tricks. She’s whiny and contributes to nothing. On top of her horrible personality, she’s dumb as a rock. But no matter what you say about Aqua, she’s a comedic gold for the series.

5) Inosuke Hashibira

Now we’re in the top five of this list and all of them are undoubtedly very dumb. On number 5, we have Inosuke Hashibira from Demon Slayer. Inosuke can be described as the pretty boy with a boar head and an explosive personality. He’s one of our main heroes and also one of the dumbest anime characters ever.

Aside from being a total simpleton and clueless guy, one of Inosuke’s hilarious characteristics is his inability to remember names. Not only that, unlike Tanjiro and any sensible character, he’s not one for planning, rather prefers running with his guns, swords in this case, running.

4) Team Rocket

Ah, there we have the classic and one of the most iconic villains of anime. Team Rocket has played antagonists to Ash and his group ever since the beginning of the story. They are consistent in their pursuit of Ash’s Pikachu or other rare Pokémon with many bizarre plans.

But truthfully, the number of times they’ve actually succeeded in their plans over the years can be counted on fingers. They’re always getting outwitted or just electrocuted and thrown into the sky way too many times to not count them as three of the dumbest anime characters.

3) Yoshiko Hanabatake

There’s no need to reiterate too much about Yoshiko Hanabatake being dumb since she’s the eponymous Aho Girl, which literally translates to “idiot girl”. She’s a high school student who likes her neighbor and childhood friend, Akuru, even though the guy is constantly annoyed by her.

Yoshiko is the ultimate dummy. She’s horrible at school work, getting zeroes even on multiple choice questions. On top of that, she’s excruciatingly clueless in social situations, not picking up when someone dislikes her. Though her dumbest trait has to be her obsession with bananas.

2) Monkey D. Luffy

The thing about Luffy is that he’s not only one of the most lovable characters but also one of the dumbest characters ever. Protagonist of the ultra-popular series, One Piece, Luffy sets out on an adventurous voyage with his trusted but wacky crew to become the King of the Pirates.

If one were to write down all the examples of Luffy’s stupidity, the pages would never cease. He’s an excitable whose every thought stops at the mention of food. The guy doesn’t want to be a hero because he thinks heroes share their meat and he doesn’t want to do that! Enough said.

1) Son Goku

The only reason Goku beat Luffy as the dumbest character of all time is because not only is he a total airhead, he might just be the only guy who thought marriage was a type of food. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who only wants to fight and get strong, and has no social aptitude.

Being the iconic character that he is, Goku is one of the original inspirations for the trope of dumb shounen protagonists with never-ending stomachs. This makes him the true number one of all dumb anime characters.
