Smoking is an atrocious habit and lethally harmful to the body. That being said, it still is as prevalent as ever. And not only just for real people, smoking in fiction is still consistent. As for anime, there are plenty of anime characters who smoke, and in this article, we’ve gathered 15 of them and made a list.

For this list, we’ve chosen 15 characters from 15 different anime to offer a greater variety. All these characters in this list are consistent smokers, but it is better not to be inspired by that aspect of them. So, here are 15 anime characters who smoke.

1) Vinsmoke Sanji

We’ll start off this list with Vinsmoke Sanji, the gentleman cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. Along with being a fabulous chef, Sanji is also a chain-smoker. Over the long years, the guy has always been found with a cigarette hanging from his lips.

Always respectful of his craft, Sanji never uses his hands to harm anyone, and rather his strong legs to fight, gaining the nickname “Black Leg Sanji”.

2) Asuma Sarutobi

Asuma Sarutobi is the leader of Team 10, teaching Shikamaru, Ino and Choji over the years. He’s also the younger son of the Third Hokage. Cool and easygoing, Asuma is a good man who always cares about the personal growth of his students, but not good enough to quit smoking in front of them.

Asuma’s also in a relationship with his fellow Jonin, Kurenai Yuhi, and they conceive a child together. 

3) Aki Hayakawa

The interesting thing about the characters of Chainsaw Man is that most of them are people of gray, and not the usual righteous hero categories. Among them, Aki Hayakawa steals the spotlight for himself with his determined and responsible nature.

But the most endearing part about Aki has to be his brotherly care for his wayward roommates, Denji and Power. Their wholesome dynamic makes Aki one of the best anime characters who smoke.

4) Yami Sukehiro

We can’t talk about cool anime characters who smoke and not mention Captain Yami, can we? The leader of the Black Bulls, Yami Sukehiro holds a three-leaf clover Grimorire and is a practitioner of Dark Magic.

Tough, rough and crude, Yami also smokes frequently and often yells death threats at his subordinates. This tough guy has a special soft spot for the Magic Knights in his squad, especially Asta.

5) Revy

The only female of the Lagoon Company, Revy is a badass one shouldn’t mess with. She’s a Chinese American woman whose real name is Rebecca Lee. Currently she’s a mercenary with their teammates: Rock, Dutch and Benny.

Revy is a markswoman and proficient in shooting two guns with both hands at once. Thanks to her skills, she’s nicknamed Two Hands. She’s also a chain-smoker and a heavy drinker.

6) Hirotaka Nifuji

Among all the anime characters who smoke in this list, Hirotaka Nifuji might just be the most relatable. He’s an office-worker who is obsessed with video games and is always seen playing them. Because of his otaku habits, he doesn’t have a girlfriend.

That is until he reunites with his childhood friend and crush, Narumi, an anime otaku, that Hirotaka enters his first relationship. He’s also a smoker and can’t see anything with his glasses.

7) Jean Havoc

What makes Colonel Roy Mustang one of the best characters of Fullmetal Alchemist isn’t just his formidable flame alchemy or his sharp wit, but also his squad of loyal subordinates. One of them is Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc. Jean is a cool and casual guy, fond of smoking and girls.

Despite his occasional snide comments for his womanizer superior, Jean is fiercely loyal to Mustang, and opts to help him even after he has to retire from the army.

8) Shizuo Heiwajima

Shizuo Heiwajima is the strongest man in Ikebukuro. He has been in a lot of jobs throughout his life, but thanks to his explosive temper, he’s been fired from everywhere. That is until he joined the position of Tom Tanaka’s bodyguard that he found solid employment.

Always clad in a bartender uniform and purple sunglasses, Shizuo can often be seen with a cigarette. He’s otherwise not a bad guy, unless he sees one Izaya Orihara.

9) Jotaro Kujo

On number 9 on this list of anime characters who smoke is Jotaro Kujo. Protagonist of the part 3 of the adventures of the Joestars, Jotaro is the grandson of Joseph Joestar, and sets out with a team to Egypt to save his mother from Dio’s curse.

Jotaro also possesses one of the strongest Stands in the series: Star Platinum. Despite his muscled looks, he’s actually a teenage delinquent and has a habit of smoking.

10) Nana Osaki

One of the many myths and rumors surrounding rockstars is their addiction to smoking. And though it might not be true for everyone, it is certainly true for Nana Osaki. She is the lead vocalist of a famous punk band called the Black Stones.

Nana is a strong and ambitious woman who never gave up on her dream. On the train to Tokyo, she meets Nana Komatsu, and finds a lifelong friend in her.

11) Toshiro Hijikata

Gintama is popular for his wacky characters; even the seemingly normal ones are also total weirdos. Toshiro Hijikata, the vice-commander of Shinsengumi, is one of those weirdos. Cool, dashing and handsome, Hijikata seems like a hot rugged guy with his cigarettes. 

That is until we see his obsession with mayonnaise, and not to mention, his hilarious rivalry with Gintoki. The poor guy also endures regular murder attempts from his sadist subordinate Okita.

12) Shinya Kogami

Psycho-Pass’ darkly interesting premise becomes more intriguing by the cat and mouse chase of Shinya Kogami and Shougo Makishima, and their clash of philosophy and morality. Kogami is an Enforcer under the Criminal Investigation Department of the Public Safety Bureau.

He was once an Inspector, but after the Specimen Case, his Psycho-Pass changes, forcing him to become an Enforcer instead. He is then positioned under rookie inspector Akane Tsunemori.

13) Spike Spiegel

Spike Spiegel might just be the coolest anime character of all time, and certainly one of the best anime characters who smoke. He’s an intergalactic bounty hunter, flying through galaxies with his partner Jet Black in their ship Bebop.

Everything about Spike is cool; from his chill vibe to the way he nonchalantly fights and even the way he casually smokes cigarettes. He stays his awesomely cool self until the very end.

14) Keishin Ukai

Haikyuu!! is popular for not only its exciting, tension-filled volleyball matches but also for its lovable and well-written characters. The smoking and piercing-wearing Keishin Ukai is also a great example of that. He’s the grandson of the former coach Ikkei Ukai, under whom Karasuno reached Nationals.

Keishin becomes the coach for the boys after being requested repeatedly by their teacher Takeda. Under his coaching, the boys become the great team that they are.

15) Irina Jelavić

The list of anime characters who smoke ends with the beautiful Irina Jelavić. A Russian hitwoman, Irina is hired by the Japanese Government to kill Koro Sensei. To do that, she comes to Kunugigaoka Junior High as the English teacher of Class 3-E, and is comically named “Bitch Sensei” by the students.

Though Irina’s multiple attempts to kill Koro Sensei fail, she stays in the school, and instead becomes closer to the students. She eventually falls in love with her fellow teacher, Tadaomi Karasuma.
